Charlie's Choices for October

Why is an ABC book like a sonnet? Because they are both structures upon which the creative artist can build something unique. This month Charlie’s has chosen the ABC book as its theme, to showcase how inventive the approaches can be to such a seemingly simple form. Come and pick out the Alphabet that’s right for you!

Once Upon an Alphabet

We have chosen an ABC book for older children (or adults), Once Upon an Alphabet: Short Stories for All the Letters by Oliver Jeffers. The little stories are bits of nonsense or riddles or conundrums which may overlap and refer to each other, all to hilarious effect.

Take Away the A

by Michael Escoffier and Kris De Giacomo is more sophisticated and is fun for lovers of word play. See what happens to words when one of their letters is removed, demonstrated with amusing pictures.

What Pete Ate from A to Z

For Maira Kalman lovers (and dog lovers!) we have a story about a dog who eats virtually anything, illustrated in Kalman’s distinctive colorful and wacky style.

The Alphabet Tree

Many parents are familiar with Leo Lionni’s recognizable style. In The Alphabet Tree, he concentrates, not on individual letters and their sounds, but on what letters can do together, leading to a rather surprising and topical ending.

The ABC Bunny

, from 1934, is a classic from Wanda Gag (of Millions of Cats). Don’t be put off because the illustrations are in black and white: the book is a classic for a reason! Children respond well to the subtle and dramatic pleasures of black and white if given the chance.

Board Book Selection

Our board book selection is made up of two small books: A Is for Activist, by Innocanto Nagara, which co-opts the form to playfully promote values, and Jane Foster’s ABC which is simply a small jewel of brilliant colors and bold designs.
